What Does a Business Development Manager Do?

While it’s absolutely true that many successful businesses begin as the product of a single entrepreneur’s vision, it takes a small army of people to help bring that vision to life. One of the people who help do that is called a business development manager – a role that is far more important to an organization than some give it credit for.

The Art of Being a Business Development Manager

Never forget that one of the biggest assets to any company is and will always be its customers.

For some organizations, that means selling products and services directly to the general public. For others, it means working closely with key leaders and decision makers at other businesses. Regardless, these long-term relationships are crucial. It’s not enough to generate a single sale. You want to keep people coming back for more.

That, in essence, is what being a business development manager is all about.

what is a Business Development Manager

These are people tasked with generating new sales leads, yet – but they also negotiate pricing and more. Depending on the company, they may also be responsible for helping to create sales revenue forecasts as well.

All of these job duties are performed with a single goal in mind: helping a business maximize its revenue as much as possible.

In an over-arching sense, one of the most important responsibilities of a business development manager will involve creating goals – and plans to achieve those goals – for long-term revenue growth. This will likely involve researching the current status of whatever their target marketplace happens to be, all so that they can create strategies to help achieve those goals as efficiently as possible.

What other Responsibilities Do Business Development Managers Have?

Business development managers will also spend time researching potential leads in a target market. If you’re talking about a B2B (business-to-business) organization, that means spending time learning not only who leaders are at a prospective company but also what their pain points are and what can be done to help relieve them.

They’ll also devote a lot of their attention to creating convincing proposals for prospective clients. It’s not enough for them to simply promise that they can solve a problem – they need to show, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that this is the case.

A business development manager will also likely have a team of people working under them, all of whom are dedicated to executing the strategies that they put into place.

Don't Loose Sight Of The Goal

In order to be a successful business development manager, it’s important to possess a number of key skills. The ability to communicate is important, as you’ll need to hone relationships with both employees focused on the same goals and clients. Organizational skills are also crucial, as one will likely be dealing with many client relationships at once. Time management skills are also a big part of the job for the same reason.
